Striving Against All Odds: Teacher Joreyna

People have different reasons for working hard. For teacher Joreyna, she strives to lift her family out of poverty and live a better tomorrow. Despite a limited schedule, she felt happy about achieving 100 lessons every cut-off. However, she realized she needed to open more lessons to earn enough. She decided to buy a UPS and open slots during the daytime on weekends, but she found out that her UPS could only keep the electricity running for 30 minutes.

Unfortunately, one day, a storm hit their home while a tornado was also in a nearby town, so the power was out all day and she had to miss 14 lessons all at once. Learning from her experience, she no longer opened daytime slots for two months and she saved up to buy backup power equipment.

Five months into her 51Talk teaching journey, teacher Joreyna was finally able to buy a generator set. Her family struggled to save up for that generator set, but it was all worth it. Since then, she has been opening slots during the daytime and doing her best to teach her students. Also, she no longer has a low booking rate and she’s earning more than enough for their needs. She also received a good performance rating.

As the breadwinner of her family and a mother to her three-year-old daughter, she is very thankful for the opportunity the platform gave her.
